CA’s Prop 47: The Safe Neighborhoods & Schools Act

Californians will be asked to vote on Prop 47: The Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act on November 4.  If approved by the state’s voters, Prop 47 would reduce the classification of most “nonserious and nonviolent property and drug crimes” from a felony to a misdemeanor.  Furthermore, the law calls for those savings to go into a new fund: The Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Fund. The majority, 65 percent, would go to mental health and substance abuse treatment to keep convicts from reoffending; 25 percent is slated for grants to prevent truancy and 10 percent to victim service grants.
